FC Barcelona Star Gavi’s Camp Holds Talks With PSG

FC Barcelona star Gavi’s camp held talks with Paris Saint-Germain in relation to a potential transfer to the French club according to L’Equipe, which cited anonymous sources.

Gavi has been on PSG’s wish list since last summer, when former Spain and Barca boss Luis Enrique took over the reins from Christophe Galtier at the Parc des Princes.

Luis Enrique made Gavi La Roja’s youngest appearance maker two months after his 17th birthday in late 2021, and he swiftly became his country’s youngest goalscorer too.

Both of those records have since been obliterated by Gavi’s fellow La Masia graduate Lamine Yamal, who has been the subject of a $217 million (€200 million) PSG bid as confirmed by Barca president Joan Laporta.

According to L’Equipe, though, PSG has separately maintained interest in Gavi. The Ligue 1 giants know that signing him will be difficult, but how the midfielder fairs under head coach Xavi Hernandez’s successor could be key.

Gavi’s contract expires in 2026 as well, meaning that if the 19-year-old can’t be convinced to renew terms in Catalonia, Barca might have to accept a reduced fee for him at the end of next season to risk losing him for free.

PSG continue pursuit of Barcelona’s Gavi

L’Equipe reports that there have been talks between Gavi’s camp and PSG intermediaries, and although no agreement was reached, the two parties vowed to stay in touch.

Gavi is currently happy at Barca where he has been since the cusp of adolescence, but he could eventually have his head turned by the Parisians who are able to offer him much higher wages.

This was the case with former Barca winger Ousmane Dembele, who told UEFA EFA +0.6% that he still maintains contact with Gavi ahead of the two teams in question locking horns in a Champions League quarterfinal first leg clash in the French capital on Wednesday.

Gavi will of course play no part in either of the two installments of the last eight clash.

He ruptured his ACL while on international duty for Spain against Georgia in November, and is expected to miss both the Euros and the Olympics as a consequence.

The number 6 should be fit for the opening weeks of the 2024/2025 club season, however, and will compete for minutes against the likes of Pedri, Ilkay Gundogan and Frenkie de Jong providing he stays in Barcelona.
