2. Communication: Talk and sort out the issues if you are facing any challenges in your relationship. Instead of being glued to your smartphone all day, communicate and interact with your partner. Talk about each other’s day, listen intently when your partner speaks and respond. Effective communication is essential for maintaining a healthy and strong relationship.

Mom and dad may have been on to something, because eye contact is just as important in marriage as it was when we were kids! It gives off the impression that the other person is disinterested or simply doesn’t care what you have to say. The same goes for when you and your partner are speaking.

Actions speak louder than words. Instead of saying “I’m listening”, show your partner you are listening by looking him in the eyes and eliminating other distractions when you are having a conversation.

Who said surprises must be saved only for holidays and birthdays? It’s time to take it one step further than the annual birthday cakes and Valentine’s Day cards. We’re talking about out of the blue surprises! A small gift just because “when I saw this I thought of you” or a surprise date. You can even leave a love note on the seat of your partner’s car one morning.

    If you approach your partner with the attitude that things have to be your way or else, it will be difficult to reach a compromise. Sometimes this attitude comes from not having your needs met while younger, or it could be years of accumulated resentment in the relationship reaching a boiling point. It’s alright to have strong convictions about something, but your partner deserves to be heard as well. Be respectful of the other person and their viewpoint.

The healthy conversation about sharing, spending and earning money is completely required at the start of the relationship. Try to reach a mutual understanding of your financial life. After all, one of the partners will always earn a little more, and the unexpected financial troubles will always occur, and these are things that every couple usually deals with. Address the worries about finances that you have on your mind, and do not argue about these things, because they very often kill the promising relationships.

9. Acceptance:
None of us is perfect. The first prerequisite for a long-lasting relationship is to accept your partner unconditionally with all the characters, qualities, flaws and behaviours. This should be mutual, so that it avoids conflicts in the first place, and moreover helps in understanding each other better in any situation. Gradually try to adapt to the qualities of your partner for a better understanding.

Sometimes, relationships become more important than Ego. This is when you need to understand that things may not happen the way we expect every time and we may have to compromise on certain things. Especially, when there is no use fighting over issues which cannot get resolved, it is better to let go and move on. This will save the relationships many a time.

11. Be Romantic:
Remember each other’s special days. Surprise each other with flowers, gifts and plan a romantic evening or vacation!! Do something special to spice up your love life. Physically and emotionally, support and give each other as much love as you can. This will keep your relationship alive and long-lasting no matter what challenges you face in life.
